Successfully completing the boat trip to Djibouti in 2018 World Cup Qualification
In 2018, due to the civil war in Yemen, the only way that that the team could get to their World Cup Qualifier against North Korea was to flee their homeland by boat to Djibouti across the Persian gulf and then board a flight to Doha (where they had been forced to play their home games). They ended up losing the match 1-0 and then had the result voided by FIFA as a result of fielding an ineligible player (officially losing 3-0), but it’s not about if you win or lose, it’s about the friends you make fleeing your war torn country to cram onto a shoddy boat to traverse the world’s most dangerous stretch of sea, notorious for ruthless Somali pirates, just to go play a sports game.
