The philosophy of Camus’ character Meursault – On honesty (with yourself and others)

In Albert Camus’ book, The Outsider, Meursault is an honest bloke –to himself, to his boss and his girlfriend. And when his girlfriend asks him, ‘Do you love me?’ He replies:

‘That kind of question has no meaning.’

And he then thinks to himself that he supposed he didn’t.

And a few minutes later, despite her being disappointed or slightly upset, the pair are laughing and having fun again.

Honesty doesn’t lead to solutions on how to live a good life. It is the solution. To living a good life for yourself and one that enables others to live their best one too.
