We often take shortcuts (which sometimes are necessary), and let our imagination run wild. But if you find yourself bothered about something someone did and them making an assumption about why you think they did it… Stop. And ask yourself:
2. Is it possible that I am wrong? That what I assume is not the case?
and,
3. What if it is not true? Or in fact it’s the complete opposite of what I assume?
You may not have the answers to those questions, but then again you don’t have the answer for your assumption either. So not knowing the answer to those three questions sure beats the hell out of not knowing the answer to your assumption and letting it bother you, piss you off or get you furious.
Additionally, ask yourself:
Why do I think this way? What does this assumption say about how I see myself? And why am I so quick to judge in this way?
There may be a deeper seeded reason for your assumption.
I don’t know. Maybe. I’m not assuming.
