I don’t know shit

I’ve got a lot of good stuff in my life but I’m also really bad at a lot of stuff. I’ve figured out what’s important for me in a few ways, but also haven’t figured out what’s best for me in heaps of other ways. And I’ve got a feeling a lot of people are like that.

It’s awesome talking to someone who has a shit tonne of knowledge about some particular thing or subject. I love how I can look at something and not understand shit about it, but someone else, who’s maybe standing right next to me, could look at it and understand fucking everything about it.

As human people, we all pretty much don’t know shit. A lot of us know a little more than others about something, a few of us know a lot more about one particular thing than everyone else, but overall, we pretty much don’t know shit. If we did, everyone would be living the exact same way. We’d all have jobs we love, have everything we need, wouldn’t be buying shit we don’t need and be living happily with 3 kids and a happy family. Or, maybe we’d all be living single and just senselessly banging our way through the population, living minute-to-minute, not giving any fucks at all about bigger things, like having kids for example.

A lot of people tell you that settling down and having kids is what it’s all about. They say that’s what life’s all about.

Tim Ferriss is pretty much the proxy god of knowledge. He knows a lot of shit about heaps of stuff, but then why doesn’t he have kids? Not even adopted ones.

Elon Musk knows an incredible amount of shit about a lot of crazy complicated shit, but he’s been married three times (and twice to the same person).

That’s the thing. We don’t know shit, and even the smartest people in the world don’t have all the answers. I, like everyone else, don’t know shit, but my not-knowing-shit opinion is that you’re born, you learn a bunch of shit, try figure out what matters to you, what makes you content, what makes you feel alive, and then you die.

What it comes down to is that every person from the 7 billion+ who lives on this planet is different. No one has the answers. And by answers I mean the answers to the questions like ‘What’s the point of life?’ and ‘What are the most important things in life?’

If someone asked me the question, ‘What do you know for sure?’ I’d probably tell them, I don’t know, maybe, three things… That the sun rises in the East and sets blah blah blah, a whole bunch of sports facts, and maybe one other thing that I can’t think of right now. And that’s the point. I don’t know shit, but I have a strong feeling I’m not alone.

I think it’s not about knowing though. It’s about the process – just taking pleasure in the process, not the result. The process is in your hands, but the result is often completely out of your hands.

I started this blog to:

1) Get better at writing

2) Get my writing voice as close as possible to the way I think and talk. All the writers I look up to express themselves not only clearly, but also write the way they talk. The best writers write the way they think and talk. That’s my goal – to write the way I think and talk.

3) to be able to talk to and learn about people who are living good lives and know a lot about stuff they’ve learnt from experience – from just figuring it out.

Trying to just focus on the process and not thinking, ‘I want this to go somewhere’ is hard, but what’s that thing people say? ‘If it’s easy, it’s not worth it…’? Maybe those people are on to something. Or maybe they don’t know shit.

A weird photo of me from the student mag I worked for in 2005. After ‘What’s one thing you know for sure?’ I wrote, ‘If Dumbo could fly, anyone can.’ I was just as clueless then as now.
